This year marks 10 years since the iPhone was first introduced, and Apple has some big plans to celebrate with new products. There’s no debate that a new flagship iPhone will soon be introduced with some amazing new features—the question now is what it will be named.

Last-Minute Name Change

Apple is notorious for keeping the details of its new products and launches secret, but new reports suggest that Apple may be changing the names at the last minute. The new flagship launch has been unofficially known in the media as iPhone 8 for nearly a year, but things are changing with the launch now just a few days away. iPhone 8 was used because it follows the previously released iPhone 7. However, a reliable source has stated to Netherlands site iCulture that the new product will be called iPhone X (iPhone 10) based on “information announced by Apple itself in Cupertino,” meaning that Apple could be skipping to the number 10 to commemorate its big anniversary. Apple hasn’t confirmed the information, but considering that the letter X represents 10 in Roman numerals, it seems like a possibility. Apple also previously used a similar name with its operating system OS X, pronounced “OS 10.” The information for the phone name isn’t widespread, but it could be credible—the same source was previously correct about the 10.5-inch iPad Pro.

However, other insiders claim that the new iPhone will be called the iPhone Edition. Both iPhone X and iPhone Edition have been churning in the rumour mill for quite some time, so either seems like a fairly likely scenario. Apple has used the “Edition” tag with other speciality models, including the $17,000 Apple Watch Edition.
Aside from the official name, we do have a pretty good idea of what the new iPhone will feature. One of the biggest changes will be an almost edge-to-edge OLED screen. Apple will also likely remove the home button and use on-screen options, as well as improve the camera to include aspects of its new augmented reality technology. Regardless of the name, the phone is sure to be a huge step up over previous models.

Other Product Names

The new name applies to more than just the new iPhone. If Apple were to keep up its pattern of introducing a new numbered phone one year and the “s” version the next, 2017 would be the year for the iPhone 7s. However, most tech experts believe the iPhone 7s and 7s Plus are expected to be renamed the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, respectively. The phones will reportedly get minor upgrades, including wireless charging and a higher-end screen that covers the entire front of the phone, similar to the OLED screen of the flagship model.

The rumours will be laid to rest on September 12 at the Apple press event. Most experts expect the new iPhones, Apple Watch Series 3, and 4K Apple TV to be announced. No matter its name, pre-orders for the new iPhone will begin on September 15, with deliveries starting later in September. Whether its called the iPhone 8, Edition, X, or something else, it is almost a guaranteed hit for Apple. All eyes will be on Apple’s big announcement to see what the company that has revolutionised mobile technology over the last decade will come up with next.
